I am planning on taking some scenic rural routes on my South Island journey, is this safe?
If you are not familiar with country driving you will need to take special care. Be on the look-out for stock (animals) on the road (normally you will see signposts warning of 'Wandering Stock'), one-way bridges and unsealed roads which need to be approached with extra caution and care. Country roads in New Zealand can be narrow, have a loose gravel surface and no road markings. Just remember to keep to the left of the road!
I don't normally wear a seatbelt when driving; will this be a problem in New Zealand?
New Zealand law states that seatbelts must be worn by ALL occupants of a vehicle at all times, even in the rear seat. Drivers may be given an instant fine of $150.00 if they are not wearing a seat belt.
I have heard that New Zealand law requires you carry your drivers licence on you at all times, is this true?
Yes, you must carry your licence with you when you're driving in New Zealand. You must have your driver licence or international driving permit with you at all times when you're driving. If your overseas licence or permit is not in English, we suggest you carry a translation from an official source (translation service or language centre).
